Sketch for a (possible) new canvas

This is from a few weeks back. It’s complete now (if a study can be) – I’m hoping to painting full figure (something I have never done) soon.

I’ve really enjoyed doing this. More to come, I think.

I’ve decided to stick paper over any available space in the studio. Random sketching.

So I visited London again… A flying visit to drop off work for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters ‘Self’ selection.
While there I managed to hook up with Remi Rough for a coffee and take in a few shows, including Barocci at The National Gallery (which was small but still very inspirational) and very cool Samuel Bassett at Nancy Victor Gallery.

Hopefully, the first in what will be a number of prints for 2013… “Pink Leaves” is printed onto 50x50cm 330gsm Somerset Velvet paper and limited to just 15. At the very reasonable price of £30, I hope you agree it’s a steal… click the image to go to my website.

I’ve been lacking in the sketch department, lately. I can’t remember the last time I sat down and used a sketch book for anything other than note taking. That all changes, right now …

This is my latest self portrait, in oils and aerosol paints on a canvas board. Yet another exercise in oils and letting the paint do what it wanted. It’s a lot tighter in places than my more recent pieces, but I think that’s because I started it a few months ago, only revisiting it recently. It’s pretty dark, but then, so am I at times.
January 15 13 / day 14
I put the finishing touches to this tonight and started a new piece for the show in Munich in February.
Although this photo (from my mobile phone) is a bit blurred, I’m pleased with how she came out. As I’ve said before, I didn’t set out with an agenda or theme for this piece, it was just a exercise in testing my limits, which I don’t think I found, if I’m honest.
It’s been a real pleasure and I’m pretty sure there are bits that I could improve upon, but this wasn’t meant to be an intense or meaningful portrait, just a study as I tend to stay clear of figurative work for some reason and I have a real hard time with vast expanses of colour.
Can you tell I’ve been looking at Schierenberg recently?

I got my piece – “Born Moody” – back today from the Día de los Muertos exhibition in Bristol.
It’s a study of my daughter in oil and aerosol paints, measuring 20x38cm. If you’re interested in buying it, please email me – julian@kimmings.co.uk
I’ve uploaded a better image after several requests.
