If you want to read inspirational quotes and feel good messages, twitter is the place to be. It seems there’s at least one person a day re-tweeting some drivel about how to be productive or creative or just how to ‘have the right attitude to win’. It’s got some merit, I’ll grant you, but for the most part its random BS.
One of the many quotes that does the rounds goes along the lines of ‘action is better than inaction’. I happen to disagree, quite often I’ll go a week or so without doing anything and I’ll start to panic, thinking that I must draw or paint soon before I lose my mojo. I think forcing ‘it’ makes ‘it’ look and feel forced. A break is often better, at least for me.

It’s with great pleasure (and a little bit of giddiness) that I’m able to announce I have joined the amazing list of artists under Laura McNamara’s wing including:
You can find out more about Laura McNamara and the artists she represents on her website – www.lauramcnamara.co.uk.
I’m very excited about this latest turn of events, and look forward to revealing more soon.

On Sunday, I drove over to Manchester to spend the day painting at Afflecks, a place I used to go as a teenager quite often – I always wanted to be a part of it somehow, it was always a cool place to hang out.
Below is my favourite part of the painting and a link to flickr where I may post more later.

It hasn’t escaped me over the last few years, since I started painting again*, just how much people rush about. How eager they are to get from ‘a’ to ‘c’, without passing ‘b’. It’s also quite alarming how unhappy most of society really is. People seem stuck. Stuck in jobs they don’t like or that make them sad because they fear the alternative or because they really believe they have no worth. Stuck with partners that they don’t appreciate and likewise don’t appreciate them, or worse, partners that abuse and disrespect them.
They’re sad so they look for things to fill the gaps, to give them that happy feeling (much like addicts). They look to the rich and the famous because it’s a life style that’s appealing. They read about them in the press, they see them on the TV and on the radio (when was the last time you heard a news broadcast (TV or radio) that didn’t have a mention of a so-called celebrity?) and they want to be them. Western society is obsessed with fame and fortune and there are a lot of people out there that will do anything (often to anyone) to be so.
I’m sure it’s nothing new, or profound, but society is screwed. So why am I boring you with with this shit? Mainly because I want to get it off my chest and because it’s the reason behind much of what I’m painting right now.
*Since I realised there was more to life than spending twelve hours a day going to, sitting in front of and then coming home from a desk job that made me very unhappy and ultimately, very ill.

Here’s the paintings I have been working on over the last few weeks. They’ll soon be on their way for a tour of Germany with a number of other artists. More on that soon.
Right now I seem to be second guessing the artwork instead of it flowing naturally, so these two have been quite a challenge.
I think they’re a departure from where I’m headed with the pieces I’m currently working on, but I got a burst of inspiration, followed it and this is where I landed. They’re almost like a marriage of a number of older pieces I did towards the end of last year.

If you’re new here, this won’t mean much. If you’re a regular visitor to my site and blog you’re probably wondering what is going on?
I have decided to make a fresh start, not only on the blog, but on my website as well. This blog has been running now (in various forms) since 2005/6 and although there’s a heck of a lot of content here, some of it isn’t relevant to what I’m doing or where I want to be. More importantly, it doesn’t show the direction of my work, or the process(es), thoughts and inspirations that I come across daily. Which could just be the reason I stopped posting here on a regular basis.
Anyway, to cut this ramble short, I’m starting afresh. I plan to share as much of my process, thoughts, self doubt and general inspirations as I can. Hopefully you’ll keep coming back.
