Always moving forward

There’s obviously a difference in technique between oils and acrylic paints – never more so obvious when you put one of my ‘latest’ acrylic paintings and the latest oil painting I’m working on together. There’s a certain maturity to the oil paint, born from having to be patient and think carefully about what colour I put down (otherwise it soon becomes a grey colourless slurry) – in contrast the acrylic paint is fast, urgent and if I make a mistake, I can paint over it in five minutes and continue. Using spray paint with acrylics means that I can get an almost perfect, polished flat surface. Using spray paint with oils means waiting for them to skin first…
